“Sons of Yirkap” is a project in collaboration with the National Museum of the Komi Republic.
Yirkap – mythical hunter, who had a magical skis, which allowed him to move at an amazing speed. One of the world oldest wooden artifacts – tip of the ski with sculpture of elk’s head, which age is 8000 years old, is in the Museum collection. Locals believe that this artifact is a ski of Yirkap. Hunting was the main occupation in ancient times in the north. Therefore, the legend about the successful hunter is a reflection of the ancient idea about the “ideal man”.
In collaboration with the National Museum of the Komi Republic, the ancient artifacts and modern artworks have been shown in the same exhibition in order to know if the ancient conceptions are still recognizable nowadays.
