Yirkap

“Sons of Yirkap” is a project in collaboration with the National Museum of the Komi Republic.

Yirkap – a mythical hunter who possessed magical skis that allowed him to move at an amazing speed. One of the world’s oldest wooden artifacts is the tip of a ski with a sculpture of an elk’s head, estimated to be 8000 years old, which is housed in the museum’s collection. Locals believe that this artifact is Yirkap’s ski. Hunting was the primary occupation in ancient times in the north, and thus the legend of the successful hunter is a reflection of the ancient notion of the “ideal man.”

In this intriguing exhibition, ancient artifacts and modern artworks unite, examining the enduring presence of ancient concepts in our contemporary world.
